If there is more than three-fourths of the tooth structure missing, a crown is usually your best option. This procedure involves reducing the tooth on all sides so that a crown, or cap, can fit over top of the tooth and hold the remaining tooth structure intact. A crown is an excellent option if a tooth also starts to develop severe sensitivity, a common side effect that could mean that your tooth has a fracture in it. A crown completely covers the tooth and all sensitivity should subside.
Bellevue Family Dentistry offers two options: A gold crown, or a porcelain tooth colored-crown. Both are great options, and there are advantages and disadvantages for both. We will consult with you at your appointment and decide which option is best for you. We will also take into consideration where this tooth presents itself in your smile, or if you grind your teeth at night.
